sometimes the news isn't bad...
Did you hear the one about the drunk thugs who attacked two cross-dressing cage fighters?

I find this far funnier than I should, I know.

(One of my friends says he's planning on installing security cameras in his bedroom -- he got the ones his workplace opted not to use, apparently -- and calling it "Little London" or something. The sad thing is they're trying it some places here, too -- San Francisco, which is awesome mostly, has at least experimented with it, and that's under the guy I'm voting for for Governor.)

Because Shafiq Rasul's employer used CCTV in his shop, he was able to show video evidence that on the dates the Americans claimed Rasul had been in an "Islamist training camp" in Afghanistan, Rasul had been working in the shop in Tipton.

(Granted, the fact that he was in Guantanamo Bay having this confession kicked out of him was something that should never have happened in the first place...)

Because my local buses use CCTV, a gang of thugs who decided to beat up a gay guy on a late night bus were identified and arrested from video evidence while their victim was still unconscious in hospital.

I've had ambiguous feelings about CCTV for years, frankly.

The thing is, really, that the technology by itself is neither good nor evil -- it just makes it very easy for the government to be evil while competent criminals can still dodge it very easily, making its use for good far more limited, and due to the limitations of the technology it will always be avoidable by said competent criminals. Kind of like DRM, but more invasive.

And yet: Shafiq Rasul was proved innocent against an evil government because of CCTV.

And yet: incompetent thugs who beat up a man for being visibly gay got convicted, because of CCTV.

I recognise what you're saying, but the practical matter of fact is: CCTV is and has been used for good purposes. Including making a kidnapping/imprisonment more difficult for an evil government. The video evidence proving that, whatever the US claimed Shafiq Rasul had confessed to, he had in fact been working in Tipton, had far wider ramifications than simply clearing Rasul.

That other side has to be recognised.

That rocks. And the CCTV video is hilarious... you can see the drunk guys were acting like asses well before they got anywhere near the two cage fighters, but OMG, nobody put them on the ground faster. XD And it looks like a few other people had tried. *snickerchortling*

The part that kills me is afterwards, when the shirtless guy is staggering around and clinging to whoever he crashes into.
